International Light House and Lightship Weekend
Once again the Bass Strait Maritime Centre is hosting the Cradle Coast Amateur Radio Club for the annual International Lighthouse and Lightship Weekend. The event evolved from the Scottish Northern Lighthouses Award Weekend a biennial event which was first held in 1993 and became the International Lighthouse and Lightship Weekend in 1998. Over the years it has continued to grow and to date more than 450 lighthouses and Lightships in some 50 countries around the world are participating in the event each year. The basic objective of the event is to promote public awareness of lighthouses and lightships and their need for preservation and restoration, and at the same time to promote amateur radio and to foster International goodwill.
The Cradle Coast Amateur Radio Club members participate in the event by camping out and operating at some of the local lighthouses to make contact with other stations around Australia and internationally. They will set up a temporary radio station at the Centre for the weekend 16th -17th August to make contact with lighthouses, lightships and club events locally and throughout the world to celebrate the weekend.
